Keema Curry – Ground Chicken with Potato & Peas

Yeah! Yeah! I am on potato ‘high’. Everything tastes good with potato. Potato tastes good in every form. Boiled. Shallow Fried. Deep fried. And the list goes on. My trainer at the gym asked our team which is your favorite vegetable.. (we are all trying to lose weight here, mind you) while everybody else answered with “zuchhini” “broccoli” “bell pepper”… I said “Potato”. Well, he did not say which ‘non-starchy’ vegetable now, did he! I love versatility of ground chicken too.

What I needed:

  • 1lb of ground chicken
  • 2 medium potatoes, cubed
  • 1 large red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, cubed
  • 5 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 inch of ginger, minced
  • A handful of cilantro, finely chopped
  • 1 green chilly, slit (you can use more if you like it hot)
  • 1/2 Cup peas (I used frozen peas)
  • Whole Garam Masala: 1inch Cinnamon stick, 3 cardamoms, 4 cloves
  • Whole Black Pepper – about 6-7
  • 1 tbs of Kasuri Methi (dried fenugreek leaves)
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1tsp cumin powder
  • 1tbs of oil.
  • 1 tsp kashmiri mirch (you can use red chilly powder if you like it spicy)
  • Salt to taste
  • Water

How I made it:

  • Added oil, whole garam masala and whole black pepper to the oil (I like to crush the garam masala and black pepper slightly using my mortar and pestle) and turned the heat on to medium.
  • Once these started spluttering I added the onions till they turned translucent.
  • Then added the minced ginger and garlic and cooked a bit. Then went in the tomato. Then the coriander powder, cumin powder and turmeric.
  • Once the masala cooked I added the potatoes and coated them in the masala and cooked for 4-5mins, stirring often
  • To it I added the ground chicken. (If you wish, you can brown it a little before and keep it aside. I did not).
  • Added the green peas and the salt
  • Fried everything well together, scraping and stirring frequently. Since I use very less oil I cannot leave the pan.
  • When the chicken had browned up nicely I threw in the kasuri methi which I had crushed a bit using the palms of my hand and the chopped cilantro.
  • Added water and cooked, covered till the potatoes were nice and tender.

You can eat it with rice or chapati.
Oh! I added the salad to counter the guilt from helping myself to extra servings of the best tasting vegetable ever.
